Paint.NET is a free image editor for Windows that has been around since 2004. It sits in the sweet spot between MS Paint and Photoshop: powerful enough for real edits, simple enough to open and use in seconds.
What Is Paint.NET?
Originally created as a student project at Washington State University, Paint.NET evolved into a mature image editor focused on speed and simplicity. It supports layers, unlimited undo, filters, and plugins, all within a lightweight installer that runs well on old hardware.
Key Features
- Layer system: Non-destructive editing with layers, blending modes, and layer groups.
- Unlimited undo: Step back through your entire editing session without penalty.
- Effects gallery: Blur, sharpen, noise, emboss, and artistic filters built in.
- Plugin ecosystem: A large community plugin library adds PSD import, 3D rendering, and more.
- Fast startup: Opens in seconds and handles large files without lag.
Pricing
Paint.NET is completely free for Windows. The source code is available on GitHub. There is also a paid version on the Microsoft Store that supports the developer.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Extremely lightweight, fast startup, intuitive UI, great for quick edits, active community plugins.
Cons: Windows only, no RAW support, limited color grading, no vector tools.
Who Should Use It?
Paint.NET is perfect for Windows users who need to crop, resize, touch up screenshots, or make simple graphic edits without the heaviness of Photoshop. It is not for professional photographers or illustrators, but for everyday image tasks, it is hard to beat.
