Krita is a free, open-source digital painting application built from the ground up for illustrators, concept artists, and comic creators. Unlike Photoshop, which tries to be everything to everyone, Krita focuses entirely on the painting workflow, and it shows in every detail.
What Is Krita?
Krita started as a KDE project in 2005 and has evolved into one of the most capable free painting tools available. It is designed for raster-based illustration and painting, with support for custom brushes, layer masks, and vector artwork. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Key Features
- Brush engines: Over 100 preloaded brushes, including pixel, ink, texture, and shape brushes. You can also create and share your own brush presets.
- Wrap-around mode: Paint seamlessly in all directions, perfect for creating textures and patterns.
- Resource manager: Organize brushes, gradients, patterns, and canvas layouts into bundles you can share.
- Layer management: Group layers, use masks, and blend modes for complex compositions.
- Animation support: Create frame-by-frame 2D animations with the timeline docker.
- Stabilizer: Smooth out shaky strokes with adjustable weight and drag.
Pricing
Krita is 100% free. There is no premium tier, no subscription, and no watermark. The project is funded by donations and the Krita Foundation. You can download it directly from krita.org.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Completely free, optimized for painting (not photo editing), excellent brush engine, active community, supports Linux.
Cons: Steeper learning curve for beginners, no commercial photo editing features, smaller plugin ecosystem than Photoshop.
Who Should Use Krita?
Krita is ideal for illustrators, concept artists, comic creators, and anyone who wants professional painting tools without paying for a subscription. If your workflow is primarily drawing and painting rather than photo manipulation, Krita is the best free choice available.
