Hemingway Editor is a writing tool that highlights complex sentences, adverbs, passive voice, and common errors in your text. Named after Ernest Hemingway, it helps you write shorter, clearer sentences that are easy to read.
What Is Hemingway Editor?
Launched in 2014 by brothers Adam and Ben Long, Hemingway is available as a web app and a desktop app. It does not correct grammar for you; it points out passages that are hard to read and suggests simpler alternatives. It gives your text a readability grade.
Key Features
- Sentence highlights: Yellow means hard to read; red means very hard to read.
- Adverb and passive voice detection: Flags words that weaken your writing.
- Readability score: Gives a grade level from 1 to 12+.
- Export options: Publish directly to WordPress or Medium, or export to HTML and PDF.
- Distraction-free mode: Full-screen writing with only the text visible.
Pricing
The web version is free. The desktop app for Mac and Windows costs a one-time fee of $19.99.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Simple, focuses on clarity, great for editing, one-time purchase for desktop, works offline.
Cons: Not a grammar checker, can be overly aggressive, no suggestions for improvement, limited features compared to Grammarly.
Who Should Use It?
Hemingway is for writers, bloggers, and students who want to make their prose tighter and clearer. It is not a replacement for Grammarly; use Hemingway after Grammarly to refine your style and cut unnecessary words.
