digiKam Review: Open-Source Photo Library Management

By 66tools

Folders stop working somewhere around the second thousand photos. What you need instead is a library that knows who is in a picture, where it was taken and which images are duplicates — and that answers those questions offline, on your own disk. digiKam is the open-source answer to that problem. This review covers how it manages large collections, the database decision you have to make early, and where it still feels like engineering software.

digiKam Review: Open-Source Photo Library Management
digiKam Review: Open-Source Photo Library Management — what it does well and where it stops.

What this tool is useful for

digiKam is a photo manager rather than an editor: importing from camera or card, a rating and tag hierarchy, face detection and recognition, geolocation and reverse geocoding, similarity search, duplicate detection, and metadata editing for Exif, IPTC and XMP. It reads RAW files and hands them to a RAW engine for development, and its batch queue manager applies conversions, resizing and metadata templates across selections. The current stable release is 9.1.0; 9.2.0 is scheduled around October 2026 with an LLM-assisted advanced search and a shift away from MySQL towards MariaDB for large collections.

A practical workflow

1. Decide the database and folder layout first

Small libraries work fine on the default SQLite database. If you expect tens of thousands of images, plan for MariaDB from the start: migrating later is the single most annoying chore in the tool. Keep originals in a sane folder structure and let digiKam write metadata into the files, so your tags survive outside the application.

2. Tag and label once, then search forever

Apply ratings and a consistent tag hierarchy as you import, then run face recognition and name the people it finds. Duplicate detection is worth one pass early rather than after years of accumulation.

3. Clean metadata and export

Before sharing or publishing, use the metadata editor and batch queue to strip GPS data where it matters and to write consistent copyright fields. For CLI batch work on the same files, ImageMagick and ExifTool-style tooling complement what digiKam does visually.

Cost and platform support

digiKam is free and open source, available for Windows, macOS and Linux, with no account, subscription or cloud dependency. Your library is the folder tree plus a database file — back both up, because the database carries the tags and face names that are not written into every image.

Who should consider it?

Photographers and archivists with tens of thousands of images, privacy-conscious users who do not want their library indexed in the cloud, and anyone who needs face recognition and geotagging without a subscription. It is also a practical front end for a local RAW workflow alongside darktable.

Limitations to check

The learning curve is real: database options, collections, queues and tool tabs assume you will read the manual. First-time scans of big libraries take a long time, and the interface is dense rather than friendly. It is not a raster editor, so creative work still happens elsewhere, and there is no built-in cloud sync — expect to combine it with your own backup strategy. Occasional rough edges in cross-platform packaging are worth checking against your distribution before a full migration.

How to compare alternatives

Cloud libraries such as Lightroom or Apple Photos win on polish and sync and cost monthly money; digiKam wins on metadata ownership, offline operation and price. darktable is the editing counterpart rather than a competitor. For pure batch conversion without a library, XnConvert is lighter, and for a single-folder look-and-sort workflow, IrfanView is faster to open.

Frequently asked questions

Is digiKam really free? Yes, and there is no paid tier. Does it work on macOS and Windows? Yes, alongside Linux. Will my tags be lost if I leave? Not if you write metadata into the files rather than only into the database. Can it edit photos? It develops RAW files and does basic adjustments; serious retouching belongs in an editor.

Verdict

digiKam is the most capable free photo manager available, and the price for that capability is setup effort and a dense interface. Plan the database decision, tag consistently, back up the database along with the originals, and it will keep a hundred-thousand-image archive searchable without a subscription.
