Ollama Review: Run Local LLMs on Your Own Machine

By 66tools

Running a language model on your own machine used to mean a weekend of build scripts. Ollama reduced it to one install and one command, and in doing so turned local inference into something you can actually put in a workflow. This review covers how to size a model to your hardware, what the local API makes possible, and the honest limits compared with hosted frontier models.

Ollama Review: Run Local LLMs on Your Own Machine
Ollama Review: Run Local LLMs on Your Own Machine — what it does well and where it stops.

What this tool is useful for

Ollama is an MIT-licensed runtime that packages model download, quantisation and inference into a single command-line tool, currently around version 0.30.x. You install it, pull a model, and run it — then talk to it from the terminal or from any application that speaks an API. It serves an OpenAI-compatible endpoint on localhost, and recent versions also accept the Anthropic Messages API format, which means existing tools can be pointed at your machine instead of a vendor. Newer releases added hybrid cloud routing, native web search and agent features, but the reason people install it has not changed: prompts, documents and outputs never leave the machine, and there is no per-token bill.

A practical workflow

1. Size the model to the machine

Work backwards from VRAM or unified memory, not from benchmark tables. A smaller quantised model that fits entirely on the GPU and answers in seconds beats a larger one that spills to system memory and takes a minute per reply. Pull two sizes and compare on your own task before committing to a download list.

2. Test on real work, not on riddles

Give it a task you already know the answer to — summarising a document you wrote, extracting fields from an invoice, rewriting a paragraph — and judge it there. Local models are usually strong enough for classification, extraction, drafting and translation, and thinner on long multi-step reasoning.

3. Wire it into tools through the local API

Point your editor, note-taking app or script at the local endpoint rather than at a paid API. If you want a chat interface beyond the terminal, a self-hosted front end such as Open WebUI sits on top of the same server. Voice and transcription work pairs naturally: Whisper already runs locally, so the whole pipeline can stay offline.

Cost and hardware

The software is free. Your cost is the machine: memory or VRAM decides which models are usable, and disk fills quickly if you keep many of them. For occasional heavy jobs, renting a GPU by the hour is often cheaper than buying one, and hosted APIs remain cheaper still for low volumes — local inference pays off on privacy, latency, and workloads that would otherwise be metered.

Who should consider it?

Anyone handling material that must not leave the building: legal, medical, HR and finance workflows, plus developers who want a free endpoint for testing and anyone working offline or on an unreliable connection. It is also the cheapest way to learn how model size, quantisation and context length affect output quality.

Limitations to check

Hardware is the ceiling: the best local model you can run will trail leading hosted models on hard reasoning and long-context work, and video-card availability decides your options more than any software feature. There is no built-in graphical chat client beyond the CLI, so a front end is an extra install. Model licences differ — some allow commercial use, some restrict it — and each downloaded model’s terms are yours to check. Updates change defaults and behaviour often enough that pinned versions are worth the trouble in production, and long prompts or large context windows can exceed your memory long before they exceed the model’s advertised limit.

How to compare alternatives

Against hosted APIs, the trade is quality and maintenance for privacy and predictable cost — a guide such as our DeepSeek overview shows how cheap metered frontier access has become, which is the benchmark local inference has to beat. Against other local tooling, desktop front ends add a friendlier interface on top of the same engines, and serving stacks such as vLLM target many concurrent users rather than one workstation. For search-style questions with citations, a hosted engine like Perplexity still does something a local model alone will not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ollama free? Yes, it is MIT licensed and runs locally. Which model should I start with? Something that fits comfortably in your memory — a mid-size general model — then compare against one step larger. Does it work offline? Yes, once a model is downloaded. Can other apps use it? Yes, through its local OpenAI-compatible API.

Verdict

Ollama is the least painful way to run language models on your own hardware, and for privacy-bound or high-volume small tasks it is already a practical choice rather than a hobby. Size the model to the machine, judge it on your own documents, and point your existing tools at the local endpoint — then keep a hosted model on standby for the questions your hardware cannot answer well.
