Remini Apžvalga: AI Photo Enhancement for Blurry and Old Photos

By 66tools

Remini has become the default answer to a very common problem: a photo that is too blurry, too small or too damaged to use. Point the app at an old family scan or a badly compressed screenshot and its AI rebuilds faces, sharpens detail and upscales the image in a few seconds. With more than 40 million downloads and hundreds of millions of photos processed, it is one of the most popular photo enhancers on mobile.

This review covers what Remini actually does, a workflow that gets the best results, the real cost after the free trial, and the cases where a desktop tool is the better choice.

Remini review: AI photo enhancement for blurry and old photos
Remini rebuilds faces and detail in blurry, old or low-resolution photos.

What Remini is

Remini is a mobile-first AI photo enhancement app from Bending Spoons, available on iOS and Android with a web version for desktop use. Its core engine is a generative model trained on faces: rather than simply sharpening pixels, it reconstructs plausible detail for eyes, skin and hair, which is why results on portraits look dramatic compared with classic upscalers.

Around that core sit a dozen secondary tools: old photo restoration, photo-to-video animation for portraits, background removal, colorization of black-and-white scans, AI avatars and headshots, and bulk editing on the Pro plan. The app is unapologetically consumer-oriented: one tap, one result, share or save.

Where it performs

Face restoration. This is the flagship. Old, faded or blurry portraits come back with believable eyes and skin texture. For family archives, genealogy projects and rescuing the only surviving photo of a relative, the results can feel close to magic.

Old photo repair. scratches, tears and fading in scanned prints are cleaned up automatically, and colorization adds plausible tones to black-and-white originals.

Low-quality rescue. Screenshots, cropped-in zooms and compressed images from messaging apps gain usable sharpness, as long as faces are present. Non-face subjects such as landscapes or text get a milder, more conventional upscale.

Speed. Most single-photo jobs finish in seconds on a phone, with no manual masking or sliders required.

A workflow that gets the best results

1. Start from the best source you have

AI can invent detail, but it cannot recover information that was never captured. Scan prints at 600 dpi rather than photographing them under a lamp, and keep the original file before Remini overwrites your expectations.

2. Enhance faces, not everything

Remini is strongest on people. For a group photo, enhance once and check each face; the generative model occasionally normalizes expressions or slightly changes identity on small faces.

3. Compare before you save

Results are persuasive in isolation. Keep the before-and-after side by side and check that the person still looks like the person, especially for old family photos where accuracy matters more than polish.

4. Use restoration before colorization

For damaged black-and-white prints, run the restore pass first, then colorize. Doing it the other order tends to amplify scratches.

5. Expect limits on text and logos

Generative sharpening can hallucinate letters. If a document, street sign or caption is the important part of the photo, a conventional sharpening tool is safer.

What it costs

Remini is free to download and includes limited enhancement credits with ads, enough to test the core face enhancement on a few photos each week.

Pro is a weekly or yearly subscription, roughly $9.99 per week or discounted annual pricing in the app, unlocking unlimited standard enhancements, bulk editing, the animation and avatar tools, and an ad-free experience. Pricing varies by region and promotion, and the trial auto-renews, which is the single most common complaint in app-store reviews. Cancel before the trial ends if you only need a one-off family archive project.

A web version at remini.ai mirrors the mobile features and is convenient if you would rather work from a laptop with full-size files.

Limitations to check

Because faces are generated rather than recovered, results are plausible, not forensic. Eyebrows, teeth and hairlines can shift subtly, and identity accuracy on very small or heavily damaged faces is not guaranteed. Treat Remini as a way to make a photo presentable, not as a source of truth.

Processing happens in the cloud, so private family photos are uploaded to Remini’s servers, a consideration for sensitive material. Output resolution, watermarking and the number of daily free enhancements change with app versions and promotions. Finally, the subscription UX is aggressive: weekly billing adds up quickly if you forget about it.

How it compares

For one-tap mobile restoration, Remini has no closer mainstream rival; Nano Banana Pro and other generative editors are more flexible but require prompting skill. Desktop upscalers such as Topaz Photo AI give more control and run locally, which suits professionals and privacy-sensitive work. If your real goal is a PDF archive of scanned documents rather than restored portraits, Adobe Scan handles paper capture and OCR more directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Remini free? Yes, with limited daily enhancements and ads. Unlimited use and the extra tools need a Pro subscription.

Does Remini work on old black-and-white photos? Yes. Restoration plus colorization is one of its strongest use cases, especially for portraits.

Are results always accurate? No. Faces are AI-generated detail, so small features can change. Compare before and after before treating an enhanced photo as authoritative.

Can I use Remini on my computer? Yes, through the remini.ai web app, or by editing photos stored in your phone’s gallery after mobile enhancement.
