Midjourney is an AI image generation tool that creates photorealistic or artistic images from text prompts. It launched in 2022 and quickly became the most popular AI art generator, known for its stylistic quality and active community on Discord.
What Is Midjourney?
Founded by David Holz, Midjourney operates primarily through Discord and now has a dedicated web app. You type a prompt, and the model generates four images you can upscale, vary, or remix. It is used by designers, concept artists, marketers, and hobbyists.
Key Features
- High-quality generations: Known for aesthetically strong results out of the box.
- Upscale and vary: Zoom in on details or generate variations of any image.
- Style parameters: Control aspect ratio, stylize level, chaos, and version.
- Character reference: Keep a consistent character across multiple images.
- Web gallery: Browse and remix your past generations in a personal library.
Pricing
Midjourney has no free tier. Basic costs $10 per month, Standard $30, Pro $60, and Mega $120. Higher tiers add faster generation and relaxed GPU times.
Pros and Cons
Pros: Best aesthetic quality, easy to use, active community, fast generations, consistent style.
Cons: No free tier, no API on lower plans, requires Discord or web, no inpainting on basic plans, commercial rights vary by plan.
Who Should Use It?
Midjourney is for anyone who wants the best-looking AI images with the least effort. It is especially popular with concept artists, marketers, and social media creators. If you need an API or advanced editing, DALL-E 3 or Stable Diffusion may be better.
