FFmpeg Review: Command-Line Video Processing for Everything

By 66tools

Most video tools you have used are wrappers. HandBrake, editors, converters and streaming servers all eventually call FFmpeg to do the actual work. Learning a handful of its commands means you stop hunting for a converter whenever a file needs to be cut, shrunk, re-timed or given subtitles. This review is about the commands that earn their place in practice, and the traps that quietly cost quality.

FFmpeg Review: Command-Line Video Processing for Everything
FFmpeg Review: Command-Line Video Processing for Everything — what it does well and where it stops.

What this tool is useful for

FFmpeg is a command-line toolkit for converting, muxing, filtering and streaming audio and video. The current stable release is 9.0.2 “Lei” (18 September 2026), from the 9.0 branch cut in June 2026 — a major release that bumped the version of all seven libraries and landed more than 2,200 commits from over 160 authors. In daily work it covers: trimming and joining clips, extracting or replacing audio, burning in subtitles, rescaling and re-encoding to a target quality, generating thumbnails and proxies, screen and webcam capture, and packaging adaptive streams. ffprobe, shipped alongside it, tells you what a file actually contains.

A practical workflow

1. Inspect before you convert

Ask ffprobe for codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate and pixel format first. Half of all bad conversions come from re-encoding a file that only needed a container change, or from scaling something that was already the right size.

2. Cut without re-encoding where possible

Stream copy keeps the original quality at rewrite speed, which is what makes FFmpeg feel instant compared with a GUI converter. Accept that cuts land on keyframes; for frame-accurate trimming you re-encode just the segment. LosslessCut is the graphical version of this same idea.

3. Re-encode deliberately, then verify

When you must re-encode, pick a quality target rather than a bitrate, use a preset that matches your patience, and check the result: duration, audio sync, file size and one frame grabbed as an image. For preset-driven compression without remembering flags, HandBrake wraps the same engine, and Shutter Encoder exposes even more of it in a form.

Licensing and cost

FFmpeg is free and open source, distributed under the LGPL with GPL components depending on how a given build is configured. That matters if you ship software: check the build configuration rather than assuming. There is no paid tier, no account and no telemetry — but commercial support and prebuilt binaries come from several vendors who add their own terms.

Who should consider it?

Anyone with a repetitive media job: publishers preparing web video, developers building pipelines, archivists normalising formats, streamers restreaming sources, and editors who need a batch operation that no menu offers. It is also the reliable answer when a file will not open in any consumer application.

Limitations to check

There is no GUI, and error messages describe internals rather than the mistake in your command. Flag order is significant, filtering gets unintuitive quickly, and hardware acceleration support and quality vary by vendor and driver — a command that flies on one machine can fall back to software encoding on another. Defaults are not always what you want, so an unverified conversion can silently drop quality or balloon file size. Complex multicam or timeline editing is out of scope; that is what Kdenlive and Shotcut are for.

How to compare alternatives

Versus HandBrake: presets and a queue, without the commands. Versus LosslessCut: instant trims and nothing else. Versus Shutter Encoder: a broad GUI feature set for conversions and repairs. Versus an editor such as DaVinci Resolve: sequencing and grading rather than file surgery. Most serious workflows end up using FFmpeg underneath one of those, so learning it once pays off everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is FFmpeg free for commercial use? Yes, under its open-source licence; check the build’s licensing if you redistribute it. Can it cut video without quality loss? Yes, with stream copy — cuts then snap to keyframes. Does it use my GPU? It can, with vendor encoders, once the drivers support them. Do I need to know the command syntax? For one-off jobs you can copy known-good commands; for repeatable pipelines, a cheat sheet of ten commands covers most work.

Verdict

FFmpeg is the most useful media tool most people never install. Ten remembered commands replace a shelf of converters, and its stream-copy mode does in seconds what re-encoding GUIs take minutes to do. Start with probe, copy, encode and subtitle, verify each output, and keep a GUI wrapper around for the jobs you do twice a year.
