Subtitle Edit Apžvalga: Free Subtitle Editor for Any Video

By 66tools

Mismatched subtitles ruin a video faster than bad picture quality. Subtitle Edit exists for exactly that problem: it shows the audio waveform under the text so you can see where a line should start, converts between subtitle formats, and can rebuild subtitles from burned-in ones. Version 5 also made it cross-platform, which finally put it in front of users who are not on Windows. This review covers the workflow and the traps.

Subtitle Edit Review: Free Subtitle Editor for Any Video — what it does well and where it stops.

What this tool is useful for

Subtitle Edit is a free, open-source subtitle editor that is now at version 5.3.0. The 5.0.0 release in June 2026 rebuilt it so the same codebase runs natively on Windows, macOS and Linux. It imports and exports the formats you will actually meet — SRT, WebVTT, SSA/ASS, SUB, STL and many others — and its core features are timing tools: waveform and spectrogram views, snap-to-frame, stretch or shift timecodes, automatic synchronisation against reference audio, and gap filling. It also does OCR on image-based subtitles such as VobSub or Blu-ray streams, spell checking, reading-speed checks, batch conversion, and command-line operation for pipelines.

A practical workflow

1. Get a starting point

If subtitles already exist but the timing is wrong, load them with the video and fix offsets first. If the video has burned-in text you want as editable lines, run the OCR path and budget time for corrections — image quality decides how much. If there is nothing at all, generate a first draft with a transcription model such as Whisper and treat it as raw material rather than a finished file.

2. Fix timing on the waveform

Work line by line against the waveform, using snap-to-frame if the deliverable must land on frame boundaries. Automatic sync helps with a whole-file offset; manual work is still needed where speakers overlap, and gap filling stops lines from flickering.

3. Proofread for reading, not just spelling

Run the spell check, then check line length and reading speed: subtitles are read, not studied. Export the format each platform wants — sidecar files for streaming, styled ASS for burn-in, and burned-in text only when the player cannot handle sidecars.

Cost and platforms

Subtitle Edit is free and open source, with no account and no subscription, on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is not a cloud service, so your subtitles stay local — with the exception of the optional online features such as automatic translation, which send text to third-party engines.

Who should consider it?

Video editors and localisation freelancers, teachers subtitleing lecture recordings, archivists cleaning up legacy captions, and anyone doing volumes of conversion work where a browser tool would mean uploading every file. The command-line mode makes large batches realistic.

Limitations to check

Automatic translation is convenient and not publication quality: treat it as a draft that a human edits. OCR accuracy depends on clean, high-contrast subtitle images and still needs a review pass. The feature set is deep enough that the interface can feel busy, keyboard shortcuts and dialogs assume some experience, and the runtime dependency is worth checking on older machines. Nothing here composes subtitles for you: style, line breaks and tone remain editorial decisions.

How to compare alternatives

Descript is easier if you would rather edit video by editing its transcript, and browser tools are fine for one file with sparse dialogue. Dedicated subtitle editors still win on timing precision, OCR and format coverage. If your real problem is producing text from audio in the first place, start with local transcription and finish in Subtitle Edit; for video compression and delivery afterwards, HandBrake or FFmpeg handle the encode.

Frequently asked questions

Is Subtitle Edit free? Yes, free and open source. Does it run on macOS and Linux? Yes, since version 5. Can it extract subtitles burned into the video? Only the image-based types it can OCR — text rendered into the picture itself is a much harder problem. Does it translate? It can call online translation engines for a draft translation.

Verdict

Subtitle Edit is the tool to reach for when subtitle timing, OCR or format conversion is the job, and the cross-platform v5 removed the main reason to avoid it. Expect to correct machine output, keep a transcription step upstream, and it will handle both one-off fixes and batches of hundreds of files.
