Audacity Apžvalga: The Free Audio Editor That Refuses to Go Away

By 66tools

Audacity has outlived nearly every audio tool that promised to replace it. The open-source editor has been around since 2000, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, costs nothing, and does the jobs most people actually need: record a voice track, clean it up, cut the mistakes, layer in music, and export a finished file.

This review covers what the current Audacity does well, a cleanup workflow worth saving as a macro, what the Muse Group acquisition changed, and the point at which a paid DAW becomes the better tool.

Audacity review: free multi-track recording and editing for any operating system
Audacity records and edits multi-track audio for free on Windows, macOS and Linux.

What Audacity is

Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor, now maintained with support from Muse Group. It records from any microphone or interface, imports and exports an unusually wide range of formats including WAV, MP3, FLAC, OGG and AIFF, and edits on an unlimited number of tracks with cut, splice, fade and time-stretch tools.

Beyond the basics sit the features that keep power users loyal: real-time effects on the 3.4+ builds, noise reduction and click removal, pitch and tempo change, label tracks for marking sections, macros for repeatable processing chains, and a plug-in system that hosts VST, LV2 and LADSPA effects. The interface looks dated, but every function is a menu item away, and the learning curve is hours rather than weeks.

Where it performs

No-cost, no-account recording. Install and record. There is no subscription, watermark, export limit or cloud account, which makes it the default recommendation for schools, volunteers and anyone testing whether podcasting sticks.

Cleanup tools. Noise reduction, high-pass filter, compressor, limiter, de-click and loudness normalization cover 90 percent of spoken-word restoration. Applied in the right order, a rough room recording becomes publishable.

Multi-track spoken editing. Two or three voice tracks plus music and sound effects is comfortably within its range, with per-track gain, pan, mute and solo.

Macros and batch chains. Save an effects chain once and apply it to a folder of files, which turns routine loudness matching and format conversion into a one-click job.

A cleanup workflow worth saving

1. Get a noise profile first

Capture a few seconds of room tone at the start of every session. Noise reduction works dramatically better from a real profile than from guessing.

2. Cut before you process

Remove mistakes, long gaps and mouth noises with the tools while the waveform is still clean. Processing first and cutting second doubles the artifacts.

3. Process in a fixed order

A reliable chain: noise reduction, high-pass filter around 80 Hz, compressor, then limiter, then loudness normalization to your target. Save it as a macro and reuse it on every episode.

4. Level the voices, not the peaks

Use the compressor for consistency between speakers rather than riding faders manually. Aim for consistent perceived loudness between tracks before mixing down.

5. Export to the right format

Export WAV masters for archiving and MP3 or AAC distribution copies for platforms. Audacity exports both from the same project in one pass.

What it costs

Nothing. Audacity is free and open source under a GPL licence, funded through donations and Muse Group’s support. There is no pro tier hiding features; every effect and export option is in the download.

The practical costs are your time and a microphone. The built-in noise suppression cannot rescue a bad recording environment, so even a modest USB microphone in a soft room outperforms any software fix.

Limitations to check

Audacity is destructive-first: edits change the audio unless you work carefully with tracks and backups, and its non-linear editing is clunkier than modern DAWs. It has no MIDI support and no virtual instruments, so music production means exporting stems into a DAW. The interface survived the 3.x redesign with mixed feelings among long-time users, and macOS builds require recent system versions. The Muse Group acquisition in 2021 caused privacy controversy over telemetry, which the project has since trimmed and made opt-in.

Finally, real-time monitoring of effects arrived only in recent versions; older tutorials still describe the old offline-only effects workflow.

How it compares

For full music production with MIDI and virtual instruments, LMMS or a commercial DAW such as FL Studio fits better. For browser-based podcast workflows with remote guests and built-in hosting, Podcastle removes the file-shuffling. For separating vocals from finished mixes, LALAL.AI and Ultimate Vocal Remover do what no editor can. Audacity’s niche is exactly what it has always been: the reliable, free workbench for recording and fixing audio.

Frequently asked questions

Is Audacity really free? Yes, fully. It is open source with no locked features, export limits or watermarks.

Can Audacity remove background noise? Yes. Its noise reduction is effective on steady background noise such as fans and hum when you give it a clean noise profile.

Is Audacity good for podcasts? It is one of the most common podcast tools. Multi-voice recording, cleanup macros and MP3 export cover the standard workflow.

Does Audacity work on Chromebook or in a browser? The desktop builds need Windows, macOS or Linux. Browser users need an online editor instead.
